Timothy A. Gilbertson

Neurobiologist Tim Gilbertson’s research focuses on how the body recognizes and responds to nutrients and how this process is tuned to the underlying nutritional needs of the organism. His research on the identification of fat receptors has led to numerous contracts with the food and pharmaceutical industry to pursue the development of fat substitutes and pharmacological agents to combat obesity and its related disorders. A professor in the Biology Department, Gilbertson serves as associate department head and associate director of USU’s Center for Advanced Nutrition. He serves as chair of the Institute of Public Health and Water Research’s Health and Scientific Advisory Board and is a member of the institute’s board of directors. Gilbertson has generated more than $5 million in extramural funding, published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and received a patent on taste-enhancing food additives. He is the recipient of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences’ Ajinomoto Award for Outstanding Research in Gustation and previously served as chair of the National Institutes of Health Communication Disorders Review Committee.
